Valentine Sweets for Beginner Bakers

So you’ve watched plenty of Great British Bake Off, but you’re not exactly a *star baker* yourself. Still, you want to do something special for your sweetheart! Here are three beginner-level dessert ideas that you can whip up with ease for Valentine’s Day.

Level 1: Caramel Sauce

Deceptively simple and downright delicious. Caramelize a cup of sugar by heating it over medium-high until it liquifies into an amber color. Then, slowly add six tablespoons of butter, allowing it all to melt fully before whisking in half a cup of heavy cream. Finally, add a teaspoon of salt. The trick here is to go slow and steady, and to mix constantly with a wooden spoon. If you avoid overcooking, you’ll have a delicious sauce to add a homemade touch to your *ahem* definitely-not-store-bought brownies and ice cream! Pro tip: add a sprinkle of Dangold Salted Caramel for some extra flavor and flair!

Level 2: Cupcake Sampler

Take a leaf out of Anne Byrn’s cookbook. Byrn (AKA The Cake Mix Doctor) literally wrote the book on embracing cake mixes by adding your own creative twists! Honor her legacy by buying a box of plain vanilla store-bought cake mix. Mix batter according to the directions on the box, then separate into four bowls and add a different Dangold dessert spice to each bowl. After baking, you’ll have a delicious sample platter of cupcakes to share with your boo!

Level 3: Churros!

So you consider yourself a Level 3 Beginner Baker, eh? Here’s a challenge then! Boil half a cup of water, half a cup of milk, a stick of softened butter, and a pinch of salt. Once they’re blended, remove from heat and stir in a cup of flour. Reheat to make sure the batter is fully mixed, then add two eggs. You’ve seen this next step on TV: transfer the batter to a 16” piping bag and shape those churros! Fry in about an inch and a half of vegetable oil. For the finishing touch, roll churros in Dangold Cinnamon Sugar. Congratulations! You’re now an intermediate-level baker, and you have some delicious churros to eat!
